Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, “last-dollar” scholarship for outstanding, minority high school seniors from low-income households. Launched in 2017 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this program continues the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to helping brilliant students realize their maximum potential. Unlike many traditional awards, TGS is designed to eliminate financial barriers entirely, ensuring that scholars can focus on their studies and leadership development without the burden of educational debt.
Each year, the Gates Scholarship is awarded to 300 student leaders with the intent of helping them graduate and go on to become leaders in their chosen professions and communities. The term “last-dollar” means the Foundation will provide funding for the full cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and the Student Aid Index (SAI). This ensures that the scholar’s financial need is met in its entirety, covering everything from tuition to personal expenses.check: ETH Zurich Scholarships 2026 | Fully Funded (Switzerland)
The selection process is rigorous and goes beyond just looking at a student’s GPA. The Foundation seeks “ideal candidates” who possess an outstanding academic record (ideally in the top 10% of their graduating class), demonstrated leadership ability through community service or extracurriculars, and exceptional personal success skills such as emotional maturity, motivation, and resilience. It is a competition for the best and brightest students who have proven they can thrive despite significant economic obstacles.
Beyond the financial support, the Gates Scholarship offers a comprehensive suite of non financial benefits. Scholars gain access to a powerful alumni network, leadership development programs, and academic support services. The Foundation stays engaged with scholars throughout their college journey, providing mentoring and career guidance to ensure they not only graduate but also transition successfully into their professional lives.
